Cardholder Alert Regarding TJX Companies

Prevail Credit Union has recently been informed that some of our members' debit card and/or credit card data may have been compromised as a result of an intrusion associated with TJX Companies, the parent of T.J. MAXX, Marshalls, HomeGoods, A.J. Wright, HomeSense and Winners department stores. This intrusion may affect cardholders nationwide. Published reports indicate information that may have been compromised includes name, debit card or credit card number, and magnetic stripe information associated with debit and/or credit cards involved in the intrusion. The intrusion occurred between May 2006 and January 2007 and may contain card data from transactions occurring as far back as 2003. We will be mailing a letter directly to all members' whose information may be associated with the above intrusion. We want to stress that this breach is directly associated with TJX Companies, and is not the result of a security breach at Prevail Credit Union.

At this time, we do not intend to cancel cards and reissue new ones. Instead, we request that you review your account activity for possible unauthorized transactions and immediately report any such occurrences to us via the following options:

Phone: (206) 382-1888 or toll free (800) 248-6928 - option # 4

VISA is still in the process of conducting an investigation. The Credit Union will be informed about member card numbers that may be compromised, as they are discovered. Once we are notified by VISA, we will be notifying any Prevail Credit Union member about the potential compromise.

As always, be on the lookout for signs of potential identity theft, especially over the next 12-24 months. If at any time you notice any discrepancies between your statements and your own records, please notify us immediately.

In addition, always keep in mind the following safeguards and additional tips are available at www.visa.com/security:

DO:
  • Always shred personal and financial information before discarding it.
  • Keep your personal documentation (e.g. birth certificate, Social Security Card, etc.) and your bank and credit card records in a secure place.
  • Call the post office immediately if you are not receiving your mail. To get the personal information needed to use your identity, a thief can forge your signature
    and have your mail forwarded.
  • Be aware of your surroundings when entering your Personal Identification Number (PIN) at an ATM.
  • Limit the number of credit cards and other personal information that you carry in your purse or wallet.
  • Report lost or stolen cards immediately.
  • Review and consider whether you need currently inactive card accounts. Even when not being used, these accounts appear on your credit report, which is accessible to thieves. If you have applied for a credit card and have not received the card in a timely manner, immediately notify the appropriate financial institution.
  • Closely monitor the expiration dates on your credit or debit cards. Contact the issuer if the replacement card is not received prior to the expiration date on the card.
  • Sign all new cards upon receipt.
  • Review Credit Reports Annually. (See contact information below) Your entitled to a free credit report annually. Simply contact one of the three main credit-reporting bureaus or www.freecreditreport.com:
